TIRUPUR: The State organiser of Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement, L Kathiresan, filed his nomination papers for the mayoral election of the Tirupur Corporation on Thursday. Kathiresan said he planned to create awareness among the people on the need for election reforms in the local bodies and more powers to them. “The administration had more powers in sectors such as elementary education, health, animal husbandry and agriculture when the local body system was first introduced in Tamil Nadu in 1959. All these powers were later taken over by the State government. Now, we plan to spread awareness on the importance of providing more powers to the local bodies by contesting for the mayor post,” said Kathiresan, also the general secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh. “We also insist on selecting the candidates without considering their political affiliation. Intervention from leaders in New Delhi and Chennai is also a strict no-no. Every candidate should contest as an independent,” he added.Kathiresan is a small-time garment manufacturer and had worked as an industrial teacher in various educational institutions for over 10 years. He is contesting the elections for the first time.
