PUDUCHERRY: Traders of 100 Feet Road here on Saturday downed their shutters and staged a road blockade near the Indira Gandhi statue demanding action against the growing menace of ‘mamool-seeking gangs’.The protest comes after the stabbing of the proprietor of an automobile spare parts showroom on the road after he refused to pay the amount demanded by a four-member gang led by ‘Tinker’ Selvam on Friday evening. Thangamani (48), the proprietor and a resident of Vannagkulam was seriously injured after being repeatedly stabbed in the shop in presence of his wife Hemamalini and others. After initial treatment at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post graduate Institute, he was shifted to a Chennai hospital for specialised care. Selvam was said to be associated with the notorious Nolla Bala, who has been accused of several heinous crimes.According to police, the gang had collected Rs 2,000 from another proprietor six months ago and returned last evening for a higher amount of Rs 5,000 from Thangamani. Cases have been registered against the four. This is the second such incident in the week. In a bar at Madagadipet on January 29, a four-member gang attacked its manager and took away Rs 5,000 when he refused to pay up the quoted amount. This has sent shock waves among the trading community, leading to the protests.
