NAMAKKAL: With the indefinite strike by truckers in Southern states entering the second day on Saturday, the toll fee for National Highways in the State has been increased.K Nallathampi, president of the TN Lorry Owners Federation, has strongly condemned the arbitrary action of the firms maintaining the highways and collecting toll for the same.“Our federation strongly condemns the fresh hike in the toll which was announced through newspaper advertisements today. Members of the federation will stage peaceful protests in front of all the toll plazas condemning the hike,” Nallathampi told ‘Express’ on Saturday. He, however, said that the date of the demonstrations would be announced in a day or two.Sources said the fresh hike in road toll was a customary one as every year the rates are revised.According to a notification, the hike could be over 10 per cent. For the stretch between Krishnagiri and Thoppur, the toll has been increased from Rs 60 to Rs 73 for cars, vans and jeeps for a single trip. The toll for trucks and buses has been increased to `257 from the earlier rate of `209. The toll for the Karur-Namakkal NH and the Thumpipadi-Namakkal stretch has also been hiked.“On one hand, we are observing a strike and on the other, the companies concerned have increased the toll rates giving scant regard to our stir. We will not tolerate this kind of attitude,” Nallathampi said.
