CHENNAI: Scientists at the KKNPP sought to dispel fear of any eventuality arising out of an earthquake or a tsunami of the magnitude witnessed in Fukushima.KKNPP scientists said the plant has been built at least 7.5 metres above sea level to avoid any contingency arising out of a tsunami. “We have analysed 100 years’ data before designing the plant,” said Kasinath Balaji, project director, KKNPP.The designers even visualised a 9/11-type attack and incorporated all safety measures against such “manmade disasters”. “Even in case of an aircraft hitting the reactor, damages will be limited,” he said.R S Sundar, station director of Units 1 and 2, KKNPP, said that the plant is also protected on the seaward side by a shore protection bund that rises up to eight metres. Besides, a tsunami of the magnitude of Fukushima, which had waves reaching a height of 14 metres, was a far cry as the tsunami faultline lay at least 1,300 km away near Indonesia. Besides, the plant has been designed in such a way that the Passive Heat Removal System or the cooling mechanism runs on natural systems like gravity and air flow. Even if a disaster like Fukushima hits Koodankulam, the plant would not have extensive damage as the cooling system is designed to operate on its own, Sundar added.
