THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Human Rights Commission chairman J B Koshy has demanded the Water Authority to explain the spread of typhoid through its pipes. The Commission took such a stand after the Health Department accused the Water Authority of being responsible for the spread of typhoid germs. The Health Department director had submitted such an affidavit on the complaint by Kochi resident K Prabhakaran that typhoid is being spread through water authority pipes. He said that most of the pipes are in a dilapidated state and that polluted water can get into the pipelines through small holes. The Human Rights Commission observed that this can lead to serious problems. In an interim order Justice J B Koshy pointed out to the old pipes should be immediately replaced. He also ordered that the Water Authority present the data of the pipes that have been replaced in the last three years and also the details of the pipes that go through drainages. The Water Authority is expected to submit an explanation by December 18.
