New Delhi: A day after the UN court ruled that India must allow Italian marine Salvatore Girone should be allowed to go home, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday claimed that the court's decision upheld the authority of the Supreme Court of India.
Salvatore is one of two Italian marines arrested in India in 2012 on the charges of killing two Kerala fishermen while on an anti-piracy mission on board an Italian oil tanker. His colleague Latorre Massimiliano returned to Italy with health problems, but India has till now refused to let Salvatore go.
Making a statement in the Lok Sabha, Jaitley said that the UN's court order on Salvatore is not a setback and the order reaffirms the authority of the Supreme Court of India.
"The tribunal has confirmed Italy's obligation to return Sergeant Girone to India. This proves that India's jurisdiction over him (Salvatore) is established," he added.
Salvatore is out on bail but lives in the Italian embassy in New Delhi because of travel restrictions.
