BANGALORE: Dug up roads, diverted bus routes and extended deadlines. This has more or less become the story of the city. The construction of the underpass at CNR Rao Circle is still underway and the project which was supposed to be complete by September this year will now see completion only next year. The elaborate project has dug up the roads on either sides from the Indian Institute of Science to Maramma Temple and from Indian Institute of Science to Sadashivnagar Police Station.Bus routes have been diverted, the bus stop has also been moved and the roads have now become smaller causing more vehicular congestion. “Since the road is closed, the bus takes a longer route and goes all the way up to Yeshwantpur. A fifteen-minute bus ride has now become a 45-minute ride because of the underpass construction,” said Suresh, a regular commuter on this route. He also adds that there are not enough lights on the pedestrian pathway on the road as a result using the foothpath during night becomes a hard. Also, walking on the pavement through suspended dust is an ardeneous task and due to the congestion on the road, there is literally no space left to walk on.While the underpass construction has begun on the Maramma Temple side, the road is still being dug up on the other side. “The project is 39 per cent complete. The construction will be completed by January or February 2012,” said Srinivas, the engineer at the project site.Another source from the BBMP said that the project, that costs `3,014 lakh, should have progressed by now but the inefficiency of the agency is causing a further delay. According to the source, the construction will be complete only in March. Further the source also added that another reason for the delay of the project was  because of traffic. The vehicular traffic on the road had to be diverted and alternate routes had to be found. Also, additional measures had to be taken so that the BWSSB pipelines would remain untouched.
