The Uttar Pradesh government has sought withdrawal of cases against three youths arrested for allegedly engaging in anti-national activities. Rampur additional district magistrate (ADM) Sayyid Nizamuddin on Thursday said that the procedure has been started to withdraw the cases against the three alleged ISI agents identified as Javed alias Guddu, Taj Mohd and Maqsud.

Sources said that the three were nabbed by special task force sleuths on August 13, 2002 with drawings and maps of army establishments at Meerut, Roorke and Dehradun in their possession. The accused were later booked under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

The ADM today said that a government counsel has submitted a writ petition in the PoTA court at Moradabad, where the trio is being tried, seeking withdrawal of the cases against them. In keeping with an electoral promise, the SP government recently decided to withdraw cases against "innocent" youths framed in criminal cases, including on terror charges, in the state pending a final decision by court.

The state government had prepared a list of 15 such youths against whom it decided to drop charges. The names of Guddu, Taj Mohd and Maqsud were on that list.
