The residents of Venkatapuram panchayat near Alamelumangapuram in Vellore held a road blockade on Monday demanding a ban on sand mining from the nearby Palar riverbed. The residents led by the Venkatapuram Panchayat President Sivakumar claimed that hundreds of tipper lorries and bullock carts carried sand from the nearby Palar riverbed and many of the borewells in the households had gone dry.
They had dug a pit to prevent entry of vehicles but the sand miners closed the pit and resumed operations. Sathuvachari Police and VAO Narayanasamy pacified the agitators. Traffic was affected for an hour.
