CHENNAI: The auditorium was filled with anxious parents, hopeful of their child winning a scholarship that can help them continue their ITI studies. This was the scene at the Sri Vidyasagar Educational Trust’s seventh scholarship function at Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya.Speaking on the occasion, editor of Dinamalar, R Krishnamurthy said there was a growing need to uplift such people and financial assistance was vital for people studying in ITIs. Citing the example of people gathered for the ceremony, he said, “Vidyasagar is doing a great job by providing the stepping stone for the world of opportunities.”The chairman of the trust, Iravatham Mahadevan, said, “It is great to see students coming from the lower strata of society, but on the flipside the number of ITIs recognising the scholarship offered by the trust has not risen.” Presenting the ground reality, Mahadevan added that there must a greater involvement of ITIs in guiding students to bag the scholarships offered by educational trusts. Many students voiced their concern that for those from poor backgrounds, sustaining their education would be difficult without such financial assistance. Most parents who attended the ceremony were agricultural and construction workers."It is a proud moment for me and this assistance means a lot to me and my family. I would be able to continue my studies without any bottlenecks," said Mahesh, an ITI student. Students hailing from the rural parts of Tamil Nadu were sincere in accomplishing their goals, said an office bearer of the trust.
