THRISSUR: The Vigilance Court, here, on Thursday came down heavily on the state government for not giving permission to prosecute controversial IPS Tomin J Thachankary in a case related to his alleged foreign trip. Vigilance Inquiry Commissioner V Bhaskaran asked the government to give reasons for the delay, while considering the petition filed by social activist P D Joseph. Joseph, while challenging the government decision to re-induct Thachankary in service, termed as false the state government’s report that it had approached the Central Government to prosecute him in a case related to his alleged foreign trip without prior consent. The petitioner argued that the probe into the case was completed in January 2011 and the Vigilance had approached the state government in February itself to get the sanction to prosecute him. While hearing his arguments in the case, the court sought the explanation of the state government on the alleged delay in the case. The court also observed that there was considerable delay on the part of the government in taking a decision to give permission to prosecute Thachankary. Later, the court posted the case to May 25 for further hearing. The court also criticised the government and Vigilance Legal Advisor O Sasi for citing lame excuses when Sasi said in reply to a query that the delay was quite natural in the government-related affairs. It was on April 12 that Thachankary, who had been under suspension since January 12, rejoined service. He was placed under suspension in the context of an NIA probe against him. The allegation against him was that he had made contacts with fundamentalist outfits during his visits to foreign countries.Tomin J Thachankary is already facing trial in the Thrissur Vigilance Court in a disproportionate assets case.
