If the Lokpal system has been put into effect, we could have dealt with corruption and other unscrupulous activities in a better manner, said former Lokayukta and Supreme Court Justice N Santosh Hegde.

At the inauguration of the ‘Voters’ Awareness Forum - Karnataka’, here on Friday, he said, “Corrupt people are not human at all.”

“Corruption dates back to the 1940s and to this day it has only grown by leaps and bounds. There has been no dearth of scams in the nation. Corruption was born right at the time when our societies were created,” said Hegde.

He alleged that water scarcity in the state is nothing but an artificial phenomenon created by corruption. “The Comptroller and Auditor General reports have said that there is no account to show where the `51,000 crore allocated in 2006-07 for programmes such as midday meals, developing primary healthcare and education and other infrastructure activities in the nation has gone. But the Government is not taking any action to figure out where all the funds went,” said Hegde.

Explaining the objectives of the forum, president of the forum K Prabhakar Reddy said voters need to make sure that elections are corruption-free. “Everyone should set aside time and exercise their right to vote. The character of the individuals contesting in the elections should be kept in mind. It is not important to which party the vote goes to. In the end, we need a responsible and transparent government,” he said.

Freedom fighter H S Doreswamy and former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Chandrashekar Patil were present on the occasion.
