BANGALORE: It was a week full of fun and information for students from various schools across the city, as the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum celebrated its 46th anniversary with great zeal.Incorporating various scientific disciplines since years, the anniversary celebration by the museum was marked with various competitions and programmes for children extending over a week.Seminars for children, treasure hunt contests, on the-spot painting contest, enact-a-scientist contest, live demonstration on chemistry of bakery products and a few interactive talks were some of the events organised.A science lecture was held on ‘role of chemistry in today’s science and technology’ to mark the concluding day.The lecture was delivered by Dr Ranjani Viswanantha, faculty fellow, International Centre for Materials Science, Jawaharlal Nehru centre for Advanced Scientific Research.An award ceremony was also organised to felicitate the winners of various competitions organised during the 46th Museum Anniversary Week.As many as 34 students from different schools participated in the seminar on ‘Indian Contribution to World Chemistry’, that was conducted on July 22, stressing on the significant research and innovation in chemistry done in ancient and medieval India. The profound knowledge and innovation that has gone into the construction of iron pillar of Delhi, copper statue of Buddha, rock and cave paintings and cloth dyes were highlighted.The ‘Treasure Hunt’ Contest on July 23 saw more than 85 students participating.The children enthusiastically went around the galleries searching for the answers to the questions based on the clues provided.‘On the Spot Painting’ contest was organised on July 24, with as many as 148 participants from 22 Schools.The topic for students was ‘Chemistry Experiments at Home’ and ‘Chemistry in Daily Life’. Students colourfully brought out their imagination on whatever way they felt Chemistry is applied to in day to day life.‘Enact a Scientist’ Contest organised on 2011 July 26 saw students passionately enacting the role of the scientist Acharya, P C Ray and Marie Curie. They brought out the turning points in the life of the scientists and their contribution to the cause of science.Live demonstration on ‘Chemistry of bakery Products and Nutrition’ was also organised July 26. It included a multimedia presentation, demonstration of bakery products preparation and interactive session with the participants.An interactive talk on ‘Oral Cancer Detection and Tobacco Control’ was delivered by dentists on July 26. This was held in collaboration with Narain Seva Sansthan and Indian Dental Association. The team of doctors explained the ill-effects of tobacco use, control and de-addiction mechanisms, dental care, early detection of oral cancer and services available for cancer treatment.
