He was a doctor first, and then an IAS officer. But 24-year-old Roman Saini decided to give it all up and tutor civil service aspirants for free through his online initiative.
Saini was posted as the assistant collector in Jabalpur before he quit and started the e-tutorial portal 'unacademy.in' along with his friend Gaurav Munjal.
"It was hard to decide on stepping down from IAS but ultimately education drove me on and I decided I will head towards this direction," Saini told CNN IBN.
His partnership with Munjal took off in 2011, when they started uploading video tutorials for civil service aspirants on their Youtube channel My Academy.
This happened when Saini was doing his MBBS at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Later he went on to clear the civil services.
Seeing that they received more than a crore hits, the two decided to go create a full-time online initiative.
"We used all our experience we had gathered in the last four years, then with a four people team we created the platform," Munjal said.
The response was instantaneous and overwhelming and for Saini, there is no looking back now.
"What excites me is the idea of creating the impact, because many people cannot access education or afford it," the former IAS officer said.
