Applying Kumkum on the forehead is said to enhance receptivity, boost intuition and attract positive energy.

Kumkum, a red paste made from turmeric, carries spiritual and social significance in Indian culture. It is often used in poojas. Kumkum is believed to gather and retain energy and is sometimes kept in the temple. According to ancient Indian texts, applying Kumkum between eyebrows on the forehead is thought to enhance receptivity, boost intuition and attract positive energy. It also symbolises good luck. With the abundance of spiritual benefits, Kumkum is always high in demand in India. However, authentic Kumkum is the priority. The market is flooded with chemical Kumkums, making it hard for buyers to distinguish between fake and authentic Kumkum. To avoid such problems, you can easily make fresh and authentic kumkum at home in a few minutes. Spiritual leader Parveen Sharma explains the process of making fresh and authentic Kumkum in three simple steps.

Ingredients

Two teaspoons of turmeric

Lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon quick lime

Preparation

Put two teaspoons of turmeric in a bowl. You can add a few drops of lemon juice to it. Mix all these ingredients well. You can also add one teaspoon of ghee and the fragrance of your choice to it.

Keep the mixture in the moonlight overnight. The moonlight charges this Kumkum which is beneficial for the health, says Sapreen Sharma. To avoid any allergy, do a patch test once. You can try it by applying it on your hand. You can use this kumkum for tilak in the temple. Parveen Sharma claims that applying the Kumkum on your forehead with the ring finger on your forehead helps in channelling energy in your body.

You can also identify fake and authentic Kumkum while buying it from the market. To check its authenticity take a little of it on a white paper. Now fold and rub it. You will see only the yellow stain of turmeric and no other colour apart from this. If your kumkum leaves a yellow colour then it is authentic. The followers of Shiva usually apply three white horizontal lines with a dot of Kumkuma at the centre. This is also known as Tripundra.
