Keep all the essential items ready while travelling with elderly people. With careful planning and extra attention, you can ensure smoother travel experiences for elderly companions.
Travelling holds different purposes for different people, for some people travelling means taking a break from the hectic schedule or for people, it is a kind of therapy and exploring different places and some people travel to be in a hotel room, relax and take spas.
Things are fine as long as you are travelling with your age group people, but travelling with elderly people can be difficult. Given their age and health needs, and after the pandemic, it has become more difficult to travel due to the fear of getting infected or sick.
Elderly people easily get sick and simple tasks such as walking can be daunting for them. So, here are some precautions to take while travelling with them-
- Be PatientWhat might be easy for you, can’t be for them. Going for a trek that is 5 minutes away with them might take around 10 to 15 minutes, or you want to enjoy the beach but they don’t, so you need to have a lot of patience, understanding and empathy because their body is not strong as yours, so try to be calm and kind to them.
- Medical EmergenciesKeep everything detailed in your phone- it can be their medical reports if any surgery has happened, vaccination certificate and all the medicine they are taking regularly. Make sure you have your doctor’s number in any case of emergency. It will help you to travel more comfortably and without any tension.
- Book seat wiselyIf you are travelling by flight, make sure you have booked a seat near the washroom area so they don’t face any issues. If travelling by train, make sure you have booked lower seats, so they can easily access the seats without any problem.
- ItineraryKeep your itinerary low-key and according to them, book places where they have an elder-friendly accommodation. Make sure there is less walking as they might get tired and cause pain in their knees or legs.
- ClothesTravelling by AC trains or cars, they might feel cold so make sure to pack warm clothes for them, or carry a blanket, to avoid them falling sick.
