Sleep is undoubtedly one of the most important factors that ensure good health as well as fitness. Lack of sleep or its avoidance can lead to serious conditions like diabetes and blood pressure. Usually, stress and numerous other hindrances of life are associated with bad sleep habits, but one should always be careful of what they consume before retiring to bed. Drinks like coffee, soft drinks and even tea can cause problems with sleep. Dr Vikas Mittal, Pulmonologist at the CK Birla Hospital in New Delhi, says that caffeine intake can increase the time taken to sleep, affecting the quality of sleep. According to him, excessive caffeine will not let an individual go into a deep sleep, which is essential for a good rest. A person may experience symptoms like frequent sleep breakdown and restlessness.
As per research, consuming caffeine even 6 hours before going to bed can affect the sleep schedule. So, an individual should avoid taking anything which contains caffeine, at least 6 to 7 hours before sleeping for a good night’s sleep.
The doctor stated further that the effects of caffeine start taking place around 30 minutes of its intake. If the quantity of the caffeinated drink is higher, it can start affecting even earlier, reports add. Some people may experience the effects later.
Consuming around 400 milligrams of caffeine daily is considered safe for adults, added the expert. If you want a better sleep, you must consume even less than the mentioned amount. It is better to avoid taking it a few hours before. Pregnant women should be very careful of its intake.
According to a website, the effect of caffeine can last up to five hours or even longer. It depends on several factors like the quantity of caffeine, how frequently it is being consumed and it may even depend on a person’s genes. Its excessive intake can lead to intense sleepiness which could have negative effects on lifestyle and health.
