Findings of the Justice Hema Committee about the Malayalam film industry have left the entire nation shocked. While several celebrities have reacted to the report, demanding justice, the latest on the list is Chinmayi Sripada. In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, the singer shared that she is not ‘shocked’ by the findings of the committee. She argued that women associated with the Malayalam film industry have been making such allegations for years but she is glad that they are finally being heard.
“Harassment has been going on in the Kerala film industry for many years,” she claimed and further thanked women to come together and open up about facing incidents of sexual advances. “I salute the women of Kerala film industry,” she added.
Chinmayi Sripada is not the first celebrity who has reacted to the findings of the Hema Committee. Previously, Chiyaan Vikram also called the findings ‘disgusting’. On the other hand, Tovino Thomas demanded strict punishment and said, “If someone has done such a terrible thing to anyone, be it a man or a woman, they should get the deserved punishment. They shouldn’t be spared, that’s the basic thing to do. They should not just be punished but we must ensure that this doesn’t happen again. That awareness, that education system must be there so that (the workspace is safer for women).”
Telugu star Nani also mentioned that the findings of the committee are very ‘disturbing’. Prior to this, Prithviraj Sukumaran also addressed the report and criticised the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for not properly handling complaints from survivors.
Meanwhile, it is worth noting that all the members of the AMMA submitted their mass resignation on Tuesday amid the ongoing controversy. Mohanlal, who was the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists, and his 17-member executive committee submitted their joint resignation.
What Is Hema Committee Report?
Revelations by Justice Hema Committee report have left the entire nation shocked. In 2017, a Malayalam actress actress was sexually assaulted following which the government formed a three-member commission. While it was headed by Justice K Hema (retired), former bureaucrat KB Valsalakumari and veteran actress Sharada were the other two team members.
The report, which was submitted to the government in 2019, was made available to the public earlier this month. The report investigates several aspects of the Malayalam film industry including sexual harassment, lack of basic facilities like women’s toilets and changing rooms, pay disparity and discrimination on the basis of gender.
