‘Doing Work That Will Inspire Future Generations’: AR Rahman Says No One Cares About His Oscar Win Anymore
AR Rahman had bagged the Oscar for the song Jai Ho from the film Slumdog Millionaire in the Best Music Director Category in 2009.

Music legend AR Rahman, who once made India proud by winning the Oscar Award, has made a surprising revelation. He said nobody cares about his Oscar anymore. Despite being a household name and delivering countless chart-topping hits across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, English and more, the maestro hinted at the fading significance of the accolade in a recent interview.

In a conversation with The Week, Rahman said that he no longer feels the need to prove himself and is now selecting projects that only satisfy his creative instincts. “I won the Oscars a long time ago, but, who cares now? I am doing work that is close to me and will inspire future generations,” said Rahman, adding “I no longer have the urge to prove myself.”

Notably, Rahman won the Oscar in 2009 for the song Jai Ho from the film Slumdog Millionaire in the Best Music Director category.

During the interview, the composer also revealed two things he dislikes the most and mentioned that his tolerance has decreased with age. “My tolerance has actually decreased as I’ve grown older. Two things annoy me: a picture request with a timer and directors that led me wrong. They will add strange lyrics, and I will question myself, ‘Would I want to perform this on stage?’ If the response is no, I decline.”

Rahman has composed music for films such as Dil Se.., Taal, Thakshak, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Saathiya, Swades, Rang De Basanti, Guru, Sivaji: The Boss, Ghajini, Delhi 6, Rockstar, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Aadujeevitham, Amar Singh Chamkila, Raayan, Bigil, Atrangi Re and others.

His upcoming projects include Vicky Kaushal’s Chhavaa, Lahore 1947, Suriya 45, Tere Ishq Mein, Ramayana, Thug Life, Kadhalikka Neramillai, Genie, Kamal Aur Meena and more.

Recently, the legendary music composer recorded a 30-minute performance video in support of US Vice President Kamala Harris, ahead of the upcoming November 5 general elections.
