New Delhi: If you were given a choice between being punched on the face by Mike Tyson and watching this week’s release ‘Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho’ please do yourself a favour and choose the former. After all, there is just no way that a hook from Tyson can cause the type of trauma that this horrible movie puts movie buffs through.
Directed by Vinod Kapri and touted as a satire, ‘Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho’ revolves around a young man who is wrongly accused of raping a buffalo. Even at a very superficial level, the plot comes across as extremely insensitive and ‘over the top’.
This problem is magnified even further by some truly amateurish writing.
Written by Kapri himself, the screenplay turns out to be extremely half-baked. It ends up touching upon too many sensitive issues such as mistreatment of women, khap panchayats, infidelity and blind faiths without even bothering to delve into them in a detailed way. As a result, the onscreen action turns out to be very un-engaging. This lack of a clear perspective results in a lacklusture viewing experience.
Moreover, at certain points, the screenplay relies more on telling than showing. As such, things become preachy and melodramatic.
The film’s problems, unfortunately, don't end here. Most of the dialogues are crass and filled with innuendos. They go a long way in dampening any social commentary/message that the film may have contained. Most of the scenes are gross and yawn-inducing.
The ‘shatru ki tatti’ sequence is a case in point. It serves no purpose at all except for slowing down an already snail-paced narrative.
The romantic sequences seem forced, thanks to the non-existent chemistry between the actors concerned. That said and done there are some scenes which do work to some extent. But they are far and few in between.
As far as performances are concerned, Annu Kapoor looks completely uninterested. In fact at certain points, he seems to be just merely going through the motions.
Why he took up this film is something that is beyond comprehension. Moreover, the veteran’s chemistry with his on-screen wife is just about as awkward as it can possibly be.
Ravi Kishan tries his best to infuse some life into ‘Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho’. However, the Bhojpuri superstar fails to have much of an impact, courtesy his artificial accent.
Sanjay Mishra does a decent job, thanks to his flawless comic timing. Similarly, Om Puri too rises above a dreadful script, breathing life into his character. The actor’s ‘kadak’ body language is quite praiseworthy. However, he deserved a meatier role. Hrishita Bhatt and Rahul Bagga are strictly okay.
The music, which has been composed Sushmit Sen and Palash Munchal, is pretty average. The ‘Naach Basanti’ track is the pick of the lot.
The background score is just barely okay. There is nothing exceptional about it. The editing is miserable. The film drags on endlessly in the second half. It could have been shortened by at least 15-20 minutes.
To sum up, ‘Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho’ is a pathetic attempt at storytelling that reminds us that not even talented actors cannot save a film from failure if its screenplay is an abominable mess.
