The video is now doing the rounds on social media. In the video, Rajinikanth said, “The central government honoured late actor and my friend, Vijayakanth, with Padma Bhushan. The Padma 2024 books will have his history and it’s a celebratory occasion. It’s also a top honour for him. I cannot fathom that Vijayakanth is still not with us. He came, achieved a lot and left us all. We can never see anyone like him. I miss him dearly. Our Captain was a Madurai veeran (warrior). Thank you.”

On May 9, Vijayakanth’s wife Premalatha and his son went to New Delhi to receive his Padma Bhushan. President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious award to Premalatha.

Vijayakanth was known for his impactful roles in the action-packed films. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from both the film industry and the political sphere.

His entire career trajectory has been dedicated solely to Tamil cinema. Despite having his movies dubbed in various languages, he remained dedicated to Tamil Nadu audiences. In an era dominated by Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, Vijayakanth managed to establish himself as an undeniable force in Tamil cinema. His choice of roles propelled him to the same level of prominence as Rajini and Kamal. These three actors collectively reigned over the Tamil cinema domain during the 1980s and 1990s.

Vijayakanth’s breakthrough in cinema arrived with Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam (1980). This film was part of the Indian Panorama at the International Film Festival of India. He truly showcased his acting credentials with SA Chandrasekhar’s Sattam Oru Iruttarai. In 1984, a remarkable year for him, he had an impressive 18 movie releases, a record unmatched by any other Tamil actor in a single year. Vijayakanth also marked a significant achievement as the male lead in Annai Bhoomi 3D, the first-ever 3D movie in Tamil cinema, alongside Tiger Prabhakar. His career flourished with many Filmfare awards and a string of successful films spanning various genres.
