Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, who has won the National Award for the fourth consecutive time, feels satisfied and more responsible now after his venture Pink won the National Award for the Best Film On Social Issues at the 64th National Awards.
“I feel satisfied that finally it’s ending with a very good recognition. For me, this is the most important one,” he said while speaking to News18.com. “The National Award is the most important and respectable than any other award ceremony. I feel more responsible now,” he added.
Released in September 2016, Sircar's production Pink, starred Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kriti Kulhari and Andrea Taring and was directed by Anirudha Roy Choudhary. Tagged as one of the most relatable films of 2016, Pink made just the right noise about the concept of consent. It gave voice to a quintessential modern-day working woman and set right the misconceptions and stereotypes that the Indian society bears.
The message Pink set out to give was loud and clear. And neither the filmmaker, nor the actors, minced their words while promoting the film. The statement ‘No is a no’ continued to resonate with women all around and that’s what probably makes Sircar’s production a significant one in today’s time. When asked if he’s been successful in sending across the social message he intended to, Sircar said, “The film dealt with a very serious issue. But it’s not that easy - it needs a deeper penetration because the issue is such. It is deep rooted in our society.”
Sircar, known to always involve relevant social message in his works, is elated but is of the view that an award is never a consideration while making a film and that this win only motivates him to work harder. “When one makes a film, awards are never a consideration. But it gives you a lot of trust and faith and this super recognition from National Award keeps you going.”
The director, who has previously won the prestigious award for his films like Vicky Donor and Piku, believes that this recognition “really makes me feel proud and makes me feel that I should keep making films.”
