Will Smith Gets Teary-Eyed Recalling Son Trey’s Birth: ‘Really Shook Me To Core’
Will Smith recently revealed that he wrote the song, Just the Two of Us, on the night he welcomed his eldest son, Willard Carroll 'Trey' Smith III.

Will Smith recently took the stage at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles for an event titled ‘An Evening with Will Smith.’ During the event, he shared his experiences with fatherhood and discussed his 1997 hit Just the Two of Us. Smith revealed that he wrote the song during a transformative moment when he welcomed his eldest son, Willard Carroll ‘Trey’ Smith III, into the world in November 1992. He described this time as “probably one of the most terrifying times” of his life.

“It’s when my son… Trey was born,” Smith, who was 24 at the time, reportedly told the audience. Before performing the song, Smith became tearful as he talked about the overwhelming sense of responsibility he felt the night he brought Trey home from the hospital. “It’s crazy, but you’re like, I cannot tell you what it was like bringing that child home on that first night and realizing that he was my responsibility,” he said.

Smith shared that becoming a parent was “one of the first things in my life that really shook me to my core.” Emotionally recalling the night, Smith confessed, “I remember that first night. I can’t even talk about it.” He remembered the moment vividly, acknowledging how he had often spoken critically of his own father’s shortcomings. And it suddenly hit him like: “Oh no, it is my turn now.” In that intense moment, he fell to his knees and made a heartfelt promise to himself: “I was going to do everything I could do to be a good daddy to you.”

As the tears filled his eyes, Smith revealed that it was during that night of reflection that he penned Just the Two of Us. Sharing more details about Trey’s birth, Smith said, “His mother’s water broke, Sheree’s water broke, and I had just opened my TV. I was trying to set my TV up and there was a thousand-page manual for my television. It was a thousand pages. It was that thick and it was multiple languages, and I needed a thousand pages of information to get this TV set up.”

He contrasted the thousand-page manual he needed to set up his TV with the fact that he was sent home with a baby with not “even a pamphlet.” “I remember I brought him home and put him in the bassinet… Cedars-Sinai sent me home with a baby and not even a pamphlet,” he stated.

56-year-ol Smith is a father to three children. His eldest son, Trey, who is 31, is from his first marriage to Sheree Zampino. He also has two younger children, Jaden, 26, and Willow, 23, with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
