Virender Sehwag wants Ravichandran Ashwin rested for 'big matches', bats for Mohammed Shami's inclusion for the ODI World Cup game against Afghanistan

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has suggested Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid to rest a key player for the next World Cup game against Afghanistan, as he suggested one change to India’s playing XI for the fixture at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

India began their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign on a winning note as they beat Australia in a nail-biting clash at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, October 8. The Indian team has subsequently arrived in Delhi wherein they will undergo a practice session on Monday. They will face Afghanistan on Wednesday, October 11. The Afghan Atlans were beaten by Bangladesh in their opening World Cup fixture, and thus they will be looking to bounce back to winning ways.

Sehwag meanwhile feels that India should rest Ravichandran Ashwin against Afghanistan and play Mohammed Shami instead. The legendary opener said that the Arun Jaitley Stadium will offer different conditions as compared to the Chidambaram Stadium.

Nearly 750 runs were scored in Delhi during the first fixture played at the venue between South Africa and Sri Lanka. The Proteas recorded the highest-ever score in the history of the World Cup and thus Sehwag suggested Shami play and Ashwin to be rested for the ‘big matches’.

“I think Ravichandran Ashwin will be rested. Mohammed Shami has been in wonderful form, and he even took a fifer against Australia,” said the 44-year-old on Cricbuzz.

“This is a different wicket, and the ground is also smaller. Also, there is the age factor with Ashwin. So, India will look to save him for the big matches,” he added.

Ashwin meanwhile impressed during his 10-over spell on his home ground, picking up a solitary wicket while giving away 34 runs. Hunting in tandem with Ravindra Jadeja (3/38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/42), the spin trio managed to dismantle the Australian middle order, restricting them to a total of 199 runs.

India had lost captain Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan on ducks, but then KL Rahul scored an unbeaten knock of 97 runs, while Virat Kohli scored 85 as the duo got the hosts over the line to pick up two crucial points.
