With the new iPhone 15 series expected to launch tomorrow at the Apple ‘Wonderlust’ event, iOS 17 and its India-specific features have seemingly gone under the radar.
Now that iOS 17 is set to arrive soon for compatible iPhones this month, let’s take a look at some of the top India-specific features that iOS 17 will bring to both new and current iPhones. However, please note that iOS 17’s features aren’t limited to the ones mentioned here; to check all that is new, check out this article.
Here are iOS 17’s ‘Indian’ Features:
Enhanced Dual SIM Experience
India has a significant demand for dual SIM card functionality on smartphones. While the last few generations of iPhones—starting with the iPhone XS—have supported this feature, the software experience to back it up has been somewhat limited. With iOS 17, iPhone users will be able to view their messages sorted by their primary and secondary SIM cards. This will make it easier for individuals who use one SIM card for work and another for personal use to distinguish between their personal and work-related messages. Apple has also provided users with the option to set different ringtones for each SIM, which is useful for both personal and work scenarios.
Bilingual Siri Assistant
Siri is receiving several upgrades with iOS 17. Now, iPhone users will be able to interact with Siri in a combination of two languages. This means you can communicate with Siri in both English and Hindi simultaneously—or even combine other regional Indian languages like Telugu or Marathi with English.
Improved Built-In Translation Features for Regional Indian Languages
Another India-centric feature that iOS 17 introduces is built-in translation support within the keyboard itself. iOS will now support translation into 10 Indian languages—including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. Moreover, recent reports suggest that iOS 17 beta also added support for the Punjabi dictionary.
When Is iOS 17 Releasing?
Last year, Apple released iOS 16 five days after the iPhone 14 event. This year, iOS 17 beta 8 and public beta 6 are already out, so Apple might follow the same schedule. If history is any indication, we could see iOS 17 the week after this one. If you want to try iOS 17 early, you can install the betas. But if you’ve waited this long, you might as well wait a little longer for the final public release.
