AAP lawmaker Bhagwant Mann, spoken of as a potential chief minister candidate in Punjab, has not just shot himself in the foot with his video of Parliament: His antics have given a besieged BJP welcome respite from a Dalit storm.
Fury over Mann’s act ensured that both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned early on Friday, taking the heat off the BJP that is facing Dalit rage after one of its members insulted former UP chief minister Mayawati and Dalit men were flogged on camera in Gujarat, a state that it rules.
Mann's performance took the spotlight away from his boss, AAP chief and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who was trying to capitalise on the BJP’s woes by meeting the victims of the Gujarat violence. It also angered the CPI (M), which tends to be sympathetic to the AAP.
First he was questioned by the Speaker for twenty minutes on the question of 'breach of privilege' and compromising the security of Parliament and then again, about allegations by fellow
AAP MP Harindar Khalsa who said he could not sit next to Mann because the latter reeked of alcohol.
While yesterday Mann had remained defiant, today after being summoned by the Speaker he appeared contrite, saying, “I have apologised unconditionally and also assured that this will not be repeated."
Speaker Mahajan would only say that it was a serious issue and she was talking with everyone on what action should be taken.
Speaking to CNN News18 from Chandigarh, Singh said, "His intention was not to breach security, his intention was to show how Members of Parliament are unable to raise issues that concern people."
