BJP not ready to buckle under PDP pressure over J&K government formation
Mehbooba had said PDP will take a call on government formation as and when it is confident that Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's vision and mission will be carried forward and implemented in letter and spirit.

While Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti is holding her cards close to her chest regarding government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said that it wants her party to formally elect its new leader soon.

The BJP has maintained that the terms of engagements settled at the time of government formation in March 2016 should not be changed. Sources say that the BJP does not want to be seen as buckling to the strong-arm tactics of the PDP. BJP leaders are also likely to meet Mehbooba only after the deal has been sealed.

After a four-hour long meeting with party leaders on Sunday, Mehbooba had said PDP will take a call on government formation as and when it is confident that Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's vision and mission will be carried forward and implemented in letter and spirit.

Mehbooba has called the alliance with BJP a courageous decision but has also said that the party will have to reassess if the alliance is effectively working to forge a reconciliation between the regions of Jammu and Kashmir. She added the party cannot form a government just for the sake of power.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra has called the PDP chief and state BJP chief Sat Pal Sharma for a meeting on Tuesday asking them to clarify their stand on formation of government. The Governor's consultations with the PDP and BJP are seen as last ditch efforts to avoid snap assembly polls in the state as the regional party has toughened its stand.
