Just four days of political tension in Uttarakhand and Trivendra Singh Rawat had to resign as the CM of the hit state. As he quits, News18 brings together the story so far and the future of BJP in the state in 10 crisp point.
CM Rawat’s Resignation Story So Far:
• Trouble for Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat started brewing when the “Bharatiya Janata Party leadership decided to act upon party vice president Raman Singh’s feedback from his sudden and unscheduled core committee meeting” in Dehradun on Saturday, March 6.
• Tribune newspaper quoted its sources as saying the BJP leadership was “worried about continuing discontent” against Rawat, which was gauged over the way Raman Singh, general secretary in-charge Dushyant Kumar Gautam and others were dispatched to talk to MLAs and state leaders over the state-of-affairs there.
• The core group meeting was held at a time when most of the party MLAs and ministers including the chief minister were in Gairsain to attend the important budget session of the state assembly.
• Apparently, there were apprehensions about all of it “spilling out in the open” amid the ongoing Assembly elections, a reason why observers were sent in such a hurry to “handle” the situation, the report stated.
• Apart from the “general discontent” about Rawat’s way of functioning, it seems members of the Sangh parivar too are upset over some decisions of his government.
• Amid growing speculation about a leadership change in the state, Rawat two days later, i.e. on Monday, left for Delhi. An official at the chief minister’s office had then called his departure “a visit of routine nature”.
• However, it later came to light that the Uttarakhand CM met the BJP leadership after central leaders Raman Singh and Dushyant Singh Gautam submitted their report to party president JP Nadda on their return from the state.
• The next day, on Tuesday, Rawat resigned as Uttarakhand CM and submitted his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya. Before proceeding to the Raj Bhawan, Rawat was closeted with his close associates at the chief minister’s residence including Cabinet minister Madan Kaushik and state minister Dhan Singh Rawat, who has emerged as a frontrunner to succeed him.
• The Tribune report stated that names of union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Member Party Anil Baluni, state cabinet minister Satpal Maharaj, Uttarakhand BJP general secretary Suresh Bhatt, and Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar MP Ajay Bhatt are doing the rounds as being contenders for CM post.
• Uttarakhand will go to polls early next year and the incumbent government’s four years will complete on March 18.
