EC likely to announce poll dates for five states
Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Punjab and Goa are all scheduled to have Assembly elections in 2012.

New Delhi: The Election Commission is likely to announce the dates of polls in five states on Friday. Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Punjab and Goa are all scheduled to have Assembly elections in 2012.

Uttar Pradesh is likely to have a 5-phase election, possibly in Feburary. The other four states are likely to have a single phase poll.

The elections are the first since the anti-corruption agitation of Anna Hazare started to target the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance directly.

Hazare has already said that he and his associated will tour all the poll bound states and campaign against the Congress party, rejecting the Lokpal Bill tabled by the Government.

Congress has been hoping of putting up a good show in Uttar Pradesh where it has been out of power for over two decades. Congress General Secretary and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi has been hoping to capitalise on his party's surprisingly good show during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and trying to revive his party in the state.
