New Delhi: Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has once again said that the rise in onion prices is just temporary and that he is in fact fearing a drastic fall in onion prices in the coming days when new supplies arrive. "It will take another two to three weeks when a big quantity of onion will arrive in the market. New onion arrivals from Karnataka and Maharashtra have started," Pawar said.
In fact, he said he fears that farmers will start complaining if there is an excessive supply in the market within a couple of months. "I fear that after a few weeks there will be a major drop in onion prices and we will get complaints on the dropping onion prices," Pawar said.
Pawar said the Centre will also release over Rs 900 crore to Maharashtra's onion farmers for crop damage. Meanwhile, retail prices in most cities continue to hover around the Rs 100-mark.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will also meet both Pawar and Food Minister KV Thomas to discuss the crisis. Pressing the emergency button the Delhi government is sending a team to Nashik to purchase onions.
