Panaji: Goa Congress on Friday clarified that in case the party falls short of the majority in the upcoming Assembly polls, it will not depend on the independent candidates to form the government.
Working president of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Francisco Sardinha told reporters that the party had initiated dialogues with the independents, asking them to withdraw.
"Some heeded to our request and withdrew, while many have refused," Sardinha said.
He added that many of the independents, including Roy Naik, son of the Home Minister Ravi Naik and Simon de Souza had backed out to support the party candidates.
Responding to a question, Sardinha said that the party will not bank on any of the independent candidates to form the government, if they fall short of numbers.
"We will not approach any independents, even if we want their support," he said.
For the March 3 polls, Congress has joined hands with the NCP and is battling with the rebellion in several constituencies.
Congress is also fearing to split its voters' base with Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, which has fielded 21 candidates for the first time in the state.
