How Samajwadi Party-Congress Alliance Helped Others More Than Itself
A statistical analysis by News18 shows that votes meant for the SP-Congress alliance went to other parties rather than helping them and thus allowing to sink the alliance at the hustings.

New Delhi: On January 29, the 'UP ke Ladke' announced their 'gathbandhan' (alliance) at Taj Hotel in Lucknow.

The occasion was jovial with back slapping and high-fiving.

The Samajawdi Party contested 311 seats and the Congress contested 114 seats which included 9 seats where both parties contested against each other. The idea was that each party’s votes in the seats it didn’t contest would go to the alliance partner. However, things didn't go as planned earlier.

In these seats, Congress got over 54.16 lakh votes, an increase of about 13.86 lakhs votes. More so, Congress got 34.39 percent more votes than they got last time from these seats.

Congress could get only 13.86 lakh votes which means the 34 Lakh votes which SP got last time were transferred among BJP, BSP and others.

The Congress won only 7 seats in these elections.

Akhilesh Yadav led–SP couldn't take out much from the alliance.

In these seats, SP got more than 1.72 crore votes in 2012 assembly polls. This time, due to alliance, their number in these seats increased to over 1.89 crore votes, an increase of over 16 lakh votes.

The alliance helped SP gain 10 percent more votes.

SP won 47 seats from this elections, while in 2012 elections they won 224 seats.
