Chennai: It seems like any criticism against the Narendra Modi government's policies is unlikely to be accepted by the Centre. Union Human Resource Development Ministry has directed IIT-Madras to ban a discussion forum which was critical of the Modi government.
The Ambedkar Periyar Student Circle at IIT-Madras was banned from holding the event after the HRD Ministry received an 'anonymous' complaint against the event.
It is alleged that the forum tried to mobilise students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes against Modi government's policies propagating Hindi and banning cow slaughter. The student group has claimed that they were denied a chance to present their case by the IIT authorities.
Reacting to this, JDU leader Ali Anwar said, "The ban imposed by HRD Ministry is a very dangerous step. We also go at these places like Bombay University for speech. This is against the freedom of speech. This is very dangerous, it should be stopped in the beginning."
The ban comes at a time when the government is celebrating its first anniversary at Centre. Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government completed one year in the office on May 26.
Modi along with his team of ministers has held several rallies and conferences to reach out to people to narrate the achievements of the Central government in the past one year.
