Bangalore: The Congress government in Karnataka has angered some educated, urban people of the state by ordering a caste based survey across the state in April - May 2014.
The state Cabinet gave its green signal to the survey on Thursday.
The last caste based survey of the people was done in Karnataka in 1931 under the rule of the Maharaja of Mysore.
According to Law minister TB Jayachandra the survey would map castes and study their socio-economic status. It will be done on the lines as the census - 2011.
The survey is expected to cost almost Rs 100 crore. It is one of the poll promises of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. According to his earlier plan the survey was to cover only the backward castes. The cabinet has now extended it to all castes in the state.
Siddaramaiah said that the aim of the survey was to learn socio-economic-education-employment and political status of each caste in the state.
The Chief Minister said "Only through a caste based survey, will we be able to understand where the castes stand in terms of developmental status and the impact of welfare programmes. This would help the government to fine-tune welfare schemes to help bring all the poor sections into the mainstream."
Siddaramaiah says that the government does not even know the population size of different communities let alone their development status and the figures regarding caste -wise population available in political circles are incorrect as everybody tries to exaggerate their population size.
Due to Lok Sabha elections, the survey is likely to be postponed to October - 2014.
