IUML state general secretary, KPA Majid said that the number of women members in the party have significantly gone up and the step was taken to give a proportionate representation to them.

Thiruvananthapuram: For the first time ever, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has appointed three women representatives to its state secretariat, the highest decision-making body of the political party.

The three women leaders are Indian Union Women's League general secretary Noorbina Rasheed, president K P Mariyumma and former president Khamarunissa Anwar. The women see the move as a great achievement and say that this change in attitude will do a lot for the community.

Not just the three women, it is also the first time that two Dalit leaders — UC Raman and AP Unnikrishnan — have been inducted into the decision-making state secretariat.

IUML state general secretary, KPA Majid said that the number of women members in the party have significantly gone up and the step was taken to give a proportionate representation to them.

"We wanted to give women prominence in the state secretariat, which is the highest decision-making body of the party. There has been a growth in the number of women in our party and at the panchayat level, corporation level, they are doing great work. They should not feel left behind,” Majid said.

The new general secretary of women’s league, Norrbina Rasheed said that this is a welcome step and their demand for many years has been met.

She said, “Other political parties and organizations in the society always say that the Muslim League is taking the woman backwards. Now this is our got a chance to tell them that our party is giving us much recognition. We are very happy that there is a change in attitude. For the last three decades we have been working for the upliftment of the minority women, not only the Muslim women, we are also working with Dalits and the oppressed women. We are trying to uplift the women and bring them to the forefront of the society starting with home.”

She added that they have also formed a women's league at the national level and their main aim is to provide a platform for women all over India.
