New Delhi: The message is loud and clear. The conviction of India's most colourful politician and RJD chief Lalu Prasad has once again proved that the long arm of the law will finally catch up with the high and mighty.
The special CBI court verdict against Lalu has sent shock waves across the political circles in India. The worry of going to jail is also compounded by the disgrace of losing the membership of Parliament or state legislature for many big leaders, facing various corruption charges across India.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who is facing trial in a disproportionate assets (DA) case is also closely watching the implications of Lalu's conviction. Jayalalithaa's case is being heard by a special court in Bangalore.
Her political rivals former Telecom minister A Raja and DMK chief M Karunanidhi's daughter and MP K Kanimozhi are already attending the trial in 2G case. There are strong indications that the lower court will pronounce the verdict soon.
In neighbouring Karnataka, the CBI has already charge sheeted former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and his two sons. His elder son BY Raghavendra is also a Member of Parliament from Shimoga.
Worried over the possibility of Yeddyurappa being convicted, the BJP is also going slow on the merger of his party KJP with the BJP. Yeddyurappa's one time rivals, the infamous Reddys of Bellary are also facing serious charges of illegal mining.
According to high level sources, the chances of their conviction are very strong. The chief of illegal mining mafia G Janardhana Reddy has been in jail for over two years.
In Andhra Pradesh, the CBI has already completed the investigation in the Jagan Mohan Reddy's disproportionate assets cases. It has filed all the charge sheets.
Five Andhra Pradesh ministers have also been charge sheeted in the same case. The cornered BCCI chief N Srinivasan is also one of the accused. He has been summoned by a CBI special court in Hyderabad to appear on November 1.
The high profile Congress MP from Pune and former chief of Indian Olympic Association Suresh Kalmadi is also staring at the possibility of being convicted in the Common Wealth Games (CWG) scam.
Former Haryana chief minister and the INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala and his son have already been convicted in the teachers' recruitment scam.
The BSP chief and former UP chief minister Mayawati and her rival SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav are the only two top lucky politicians, who have been let off.
