Mamata Creates State Security Adviser’s Post on Lines of NSA, BJP Says Move to Please Bureaucrats
Denouncing the CM’s move, BJP state secretary Sayantan Basu said the creation of new post could be seen as an attempt at pleasing the bureaucrats.

Kolkata: Amid reports of Maoists trying to regroup in Jangalmahal, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has created a new post of State Security Adviser (SSA), similar to Centre’s NSA, and appointed DGP Surajit Kar Purkayastha as its chief.

Denouncing the CM’s move, BJP state secretary Sayantan Basu said the creation of new post could be seen as an attempt at pleasing the bureaucrats.

Speaking Exclusively to News18, Purkayastha said, “I have come to this profession to devote myself to public service. With this new role as SSA, I will try to put in my best to serve the people of Bengal with utmost priority. I am ready to accept this challenge.”

BJP alleged that the move is unlikely to improve the law and order situation the Bengal.

“Such a post is not going to help the law and order situation in Bengal. The Ruling TMC is killing our workers. The latest killings happened in Purulia on Tuesday night,” said Basu.

Purkayastha, who had earlier served as Commissioner of Police (Kolkata) and DG, CID, will also work in close coordination with the Central Agencies on state security affairs. He is known as one of the finest officers in Bengal and won several awards for his commitments towards the society.

Besides reporting directly to Banerjee, SSA will have the power of ‘strategic intervention’ when it comes to the security of Bengal by providing a ‘grid of state intelligence’ (on the line of National Intelligence Grid).

SSA will also have a close coordination with the security agencies in Nepal and Bangladesh.
