New Delhi: At the end of 100 days in power, an examination of some of the out-of-the-box ideas proposed by the Narendra Modi government is necessary to assess their sustainability.

In his maiden Independence Day address to the nation, the Prime Minister declared one of his most ambitious projects- to provide access to banking and insurance to all-the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna.

The second most ambitious project to have been launched by the NDA govt was digital India, to provide access to internet and concomitant technology even in the hinterland in spite of the Opposition claiming that the ground work for most of the schemes was done during the UPA regime.

But the most talked about policy decision of the NDA government has been to scrap the Planning Commission, an institution established during the Nehruvian era. The financial powers of the commission was curtailed after the government came to power in May. The decision has drawn criticism as well, especially from some states.

The Prime Minister seems to be at the center of everything in a centralised system of governance. Unfortunately, a centralised system also has its pitfalls. The credit for success is unambiguously bestowed on the head of the government as well as the flaws and failures.

There is an unmistakable parallel in Narendra Modi's style of functioning as chief minister of Gujarat and as the Prime Minister of the nation, communicating directly with the masses while taking big ticket administrative decisions.
