New Delhi: Over 1.7 lakh new voter enrolment forms were received at special camps set up across Delhi on Sunday for people to enrol and verify their names in electoral rolls ahead Lok Sabha elections beginning next month. The special camps were organised by Election Commission at 11,763 polling stations of nine districts in Delhi to help both the existing voters to verify their details and aspiring ones for getting themselves registered.
Booth Level Officers (BLO) were deployed at the camps to help the existing voters to verify their names on the voters' list, a statement issued by EC said. It said that a camp was set up at every polling station where the electoral roll was pasted for people to check whether their names were there or not in the list. New voters could enrol themselves by filling up 'Form 6' on the spot. The last date registration is March 12.
"Total, over 1.70 lakh forms have been received in Delhi, which will be disposed off timely, so that the citizens can exercise their right of franchise in the coming Lok Sabha Election scheduled for 10 April, 2014," the release said. Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi visited the polling location at Sri Venkateswara College and was satisfied with the arrangements made by Delhi for display of electoral rolls and facility provided to visiting people for checking their name in the electoral roll and filling and depositing Form 6, the release said.
The camps were supervised by the senior officers of the office of the Chief Electoral Officer and the District Election Offices. The Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev also made surprise visits at several polling locations including Hanuman Road, Lodhi Estate, Pandara Road, RK Puram.
District election officer Ashima Jain said that apart from checking and verifying details of voters, the facility of new registration was also provided to people. Central District Election Office had set up special camps at 1,056 polling stations in 306 polling locations.
To ensure record voting turnout in 2014 Lok Sabha polls and to bring awareness, a cultural programme was also organised in Old Delhi area. The Lok Sabha elections will be held between April 7 and May 12, over a spread of nine days, in the highest number of phases so far in the country. Counting of votes in all the 543 constituencies involving an electorate of 81.4 crore will be done on May 16.
