New Delhi: A BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh's Gonda on Saturday stoked a controversy saying that only Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath are corruption-free.
Brij Bhushan Sharan further said that the surety about the same for other BJP leaders cannot be guaranteed.
"Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath do not indulge in any kind of corruption. And, please listen carefully; I've said that only the prime minister and the chief minister are incorruptible. I cannot say the same thing about other leaders of our party," he said in a public rally.
The lawmaker, known to make controversial comments in the past, had earlier compared the Congress president Rahul Gandhi to a 'barking dog'.
Earlier this week, a ruling party MLA in Uttar Pradesh asked his supporters to thrash government officials with shoes if they demand a bribe.
Give them a ghoosa (punch) if they ask for ghoos (bribe), the BJP MLA from Bairia Surendra Singh told his supporters.
"Ghoos mangey to ghoosa do, nahin maaney to joota do," he said, coining a slogan.
A string of BJP leaders - from Biplab Deb, to Surendra Singh to Dinesh Sharma - have been involved in series of gaffes, which have caused embarrassment to the party.
In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an interaction with the party's MPs, MLAs and other representatives through the NaMo App warned all to steer clear of making controversial statements to the media.
"We commit mistakes and give masala to media. The moment we see a camera, we jump to make a statement as if we are great social scientists or experts ... and then these ill-informed statements are used by media. It is not the media's fault," he said.
The PM said that the levers of governance should be moved for issues of larger public interest, keeping the principle of sarvajan hitaaya, sarvajan sukhaaya [for everyone’s benefit and happiness] rather than to push individual interests.
