Relief for BJP in Bihar, Lal Muni Chaubey withdraws candidature
He announced in Patna on Friday that he was no longer contesting and would instead support the party.

Patna: Senior Bihar Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Lal Muni Chaubey, who won from Buxar Lok Sabha seat from 1996 to 2004, has withdrawn his nomination as an Independent candidate from the constituency after party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi repeatedly called him and asked him not to do so.

Chaubey, who jumped into the fray on Wednesday as an Independent after the party denied him a ticket, announced in Patna on Friday that he was no longer contesting and would instead support the party.

"I will not contest as an Independent from Buxar as Modiji has called me requested not to do so. After Modi spoke to me, I decided to withdraw my nomination papers," said Chaubey.

Chaubey is a prominent Brahmin face of the BJP and with him in the fray things could have get tough for the party not only in Buxar but in many seats of Bihar and even in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier, Chaubey had rebuffed all moves by the BJP leaders to placate him and even told Narendra Modi curtly that the party had ignored senior leaders and humiliated him by fielding Bhagalpur MLA Ashwini Kumar Chaubey from Buxar. Bihar BJP leaders Sushil Kumar Modi and Ashwini Kumar Chaubey, too, had failed to mollify him.

Chaubey had won from Buxar in 1996, 98, 99 and 2004. He narrowly lost to Rashtriya Janata Dal's Sadanand Singh in the 2009 elections by just over 2000 votes.
