WB Panchayat polls: HC to hear case on deployment of central forces
WB government to inform the court that it had not received response from Home Ministry despite repeated attempts.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday is likely to hear the case on the deployment of central forces during Panchayat elections in the state. The state government is expected to inform the court that it has not received any response from the Union Home Ministry regarding troop deployment. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had twice sought a response from the Centre on the issue of security.

The High Court had on Monday slammed the Centre for not providing adequate forces for the state Panchayat elections, when it has provided such forces to other states. The state government and the State Election Commission (SEC) have locked horns over the issue of security for the polls.

The state will go to polls on July 2, 6 and 9. The state election commission has maintained that it is the state government's responsibility to provide adequate security forces in case new poll dates are announced.

The state government had hit back and accused the state election commission of being reluctant to hold polls.
