The start of the year comes with a security warning for Chrome users, especially if you use it on Windows PC or a Mac. The Indian government has issued this warning if you are using the older and outdated version of the Google Chrome web browser on your systems. The warning comes with a high severity rating from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) with a date stamp of January 9.
Here’s what the security warning says: Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Chrome which could be exploited by remote attackers to compromise the targeted system.
For those who are finding it hard to understand the issue, the warning clearly states a security problem with a component in Chrome which can give remote access of your system to the attacker.
Giving more details about the issue, CERT-In bulletin explains, “these vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to heap buffer overflow in ANGLE, use-after-free error in ANGLE, WebAudio, WebGPU. A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a victim to visit a specially crafted web page.”
The security issue affects these Chrome versions on Windows and MacOS:
– Google Chrome versions prior to 120.0.6099.199 for Mac and Linux users
– Google Chrome versions prior to 120.0.6099.199/200 for Windows users
Chrome users get these warnings regularly which is just the security agency informing millions of users in India. Most of these issues have already been fixed by the company and even here, you can just update the Chrome browser on your PC or Mac to protect yourself from these possible attacks.
