When Meta’s Threads first debuted last year to compete with X (formerly known as Twitter), the user experience was extremely basic. It lacked tags, a web-based interface, and the ability to delete the Threads profile independently, requiring users to delete their entire Instagram profile. However, Meta has been responsive to user feedback and has gradually introduced various features for the app, thanks to a growing user base.
Recently, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced that Threads is testing a new feature allowing users to view trending topics on the platform. Similar to X’s Trending section, Threads will now incorporate this functionality. Zuckerberg shared the news through a post on Threads, stating, “Rolling out a small test of today’s top topics on Threads in the US. We’ll roll it out in more countries and languages once we get it tuned up…”
In addition to Zuckerberg’s announcement, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri added that this feature, called ‘Today’s topics,’ will appear on the search page and in the ‘For You’ feed. Mosseri also disclosed that the section’s content ranking is determined by AI systems, taking into account what people are currently engaging with on Threads.
Plus, to make sure that the topics are not duplicated or confusing, Threads’ content specialists will “review the topics” chosen by the AI systems. “We’ll learn from this test and iterate over time,” Mosseri added.
When this addition launches in full capacity on Threads, it will provide a more complete experience—similar to what you get on X. Furthermore, recent reports suggesting Threads’ gradual return to track in username acquisition indicate that this enhancement will play a more significant role in helping people rank according to trends.
