Duke Kahanamoku was an Olympic swimmer, an actor, lawman, early beach volleyball player, and a businessman. The legendary Hawaiian has been credited with introducing the art of surfing to the world. Also called The Big Kanuha, Kahanamoku has featured in a dozen feature films and surfed the world’s most imposing swells before Californians knew what surfing was. On his 125th birth anniversary today, here are some of the moments from the life of the ‘Grandfather of Surfing.’
