Duke Kahanamoku was an Olympic swimmer, an actor, lawman, early beach volleyball player, and a businessman. The legendary Hawaiian has been credited with introducing the art of surfing to the world. Also called The Big Kanuha, Kahanamoku has featured in a dozen feature films and surfed the world’s most imposing swells before Californians knew what surfing was.
