A man from Sydney, Australia, Jian Zhong Li, has disclosed the shocking rationale behind his action of cutting off his brother’s ear during his funeral. On the day his brother was to be laid to rest, Jian Zhong Li, accompanied by his son, approached his brother’s coffin, opened it, and severed a portion of his brother’s ear. He asserts that he felt he had “no other choice” in a desperate final attempt to prove that his nephew was not legitimate.
Jian Zhong Li was convinced that his nephew, Cheng Zhang Li, the son of his deceased brother Jian Ming Li, who passed away at the age of 58 due to a lung condition, was illegitimate. He based this belief on the ‘suspicious’ beard Cheng was able to grow. If proven true, Cheng would have forfeited his entitlement to his father’s inheritance, which included a million-dollar home in the sought-after suburb of Petersham in southwest Sydney. Jian Ming Li had not left a valid will.
The act was carried out in 2022 and Zhong Li was arrested for the same. He faced charges of interfering with the body but has since disclosed his motives. He stated that he had initially requested Cheng to undergo a DNA test. However, when Cheng refused, he felt compelled to take matters into his own hands.
In an interview with A Current Affair, Li explained that he took a portion of the ear for a little bit for the DNA. He elaborated, “We can’t cut the whole. I just wanted a sample…a little bit.” Li added that his 91-year-old mother should be entitled to his brother’s inheritance. “Mother has to get some maintenance because she has been living under poor conditions,” he further said.
He mentioned that his plea to obtain a sample of his brother’s skin or hair was rejected by the funeral director, leaving him with “no other chance.” He explained that he placed the severed ear in a “plastic bag” and then transferred it into a glass jar, which he subsequently placed in the refrigerator. Cheng was later found to be the legitimate son of Jian Ming Li.
