A lucky dog was saved thanks to an inspection by US Coast Guards who were randomly inspecting containers at a Texas port. A team of marine inspectors from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston rescued the dog on February 1. The maritime security service explained this unexpected rescue in a Facebook post and wrote that the guards randomly selected thousands of shipping containers for inspection when “they heard barking and scratching coming from one of the containers in a stack". When the guards lowered the container and opened its door, a dog came out.
The post further read, “This sweet girl was trapped in the container for at least a week and was tired, hungry, and very happy to see her rescuers." The Coast Guards immediately gave her water and brought her to a local animal shelter. The rescued dog was named ‘Connie the Container Dog’.
This post has gathered hundreds of likes and comments. A Facebook user wrote, “WELL DONE to all the alert and caring guys from the Coast Guard who rescued Connie bless you and all the animal rescue caring animal lovers… Looks like Connie has more than enough fur-loving homes to give her a wonderful happy family."
The authorities predict that the stray dog must have been living inside one of the junk cars when it was loaded into the shipping container. Had the Coast Guards not noticed her barking, she could have been trapped in the container for longer. In an update, the Coast Guards mentioned that currently, Connie is currently under the care of Forever Changed Animal Rescue. They urged people to adopt Connie.
The Forever Changed Animal Rescue, gave an update on the pooch and wrote, “Connie is a bit under weight and currently weighs 30lbs." They described her as “incredibly sweet but very shy and scared of her new surroundings as to be expected." The rescue service added that Connie is heartworm positive and mentioned that they are starting her treatment immediately.
Heartworm disease is a serious parasitic infection. It is mostly found in dogs, cats, and ferrets. It’s caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis. The infection can be fatal if not treated on time. In the comments, many people have offered to adopt Connie but so far the rescuers have not finalised her forever home.
