‘It Was Horrible’: UK Woman Gives Birth Alone In Her Bathroom
After timing her contractions in the bathroom, the woman waited 15 minutes before waking her husband.

A woman has told how she gave birth alone on the floor of her bathroom, without involving her husband. Teagan Swoboda went into labour at 5.45 am on August 11, 2024. She didn’t know how quickly her baby would come. After timing her contractions in the bathroom, Teagan waited 15 minutes before waking her husband Tony Swoboda. She explained: “I thought if it’s going to be a long day, I want him to be well rested.” Tony, 41, headed downstairs to prepare equipment for a water birth. Teagan called him at around 6.30 am to tell him it was “going to be quick”. Unfortunately, Tony didn’t hear Teagan calling him as he was busy preparing the pool. Just six minutes later, Teagan gave birth to her baby daughter Elliot in her bathroom, all alone. Teagan, of Wasilla, Alaska, recalled: “I couldn’t even reach the bathtub in front of me – I was struggling to walk. I gave birth to her alone, which was horrible. I was trying to catch her head and hold one arm. I held her head and hooked my arm under her armpit.

“When she came out, I put her on the toilet to pick her up. I laid her on top of me, she was crying and I stroked her back – I just stared at her, it was like time had stopped.”

A few minutes later, Tony rushed upstairs to tell his wife that the pool was ready, but when he entered the bathroom, he realised he was too late. Professional nurse Teagan recalled: “I didn’t have time to process it, I was in shock. My husband came upstairs when the bath was ready, he went into the bathroom and saw that my water had broken.

“He got a little dizzy and said everything was ready – I said, ‘Yeah, great, but look what I got’. He was in complete shock.”

To Tony’s amazement, baby Elliot, their first daughter, was already there. The proud mum continued: “I sat there with her and he got our boys so they could meet her. We waited for the midwife to come and got into bed – we could stay at home.

Teagan, who is also mum to four kids Alexander, Brayden, Colby, and Delfin, found out she was pregnant in December 2023. The happy news came as a shock to her and Tony, who hadn’t been trying for a fifth child. According to Teagan, this was her most difficult pregnancy and she struggled with morning sickness and aches as the time approached.
