'Marry Me': How a Pune Man Proposed to His Girlfriend Using a Crossword Puzzle
In Pune, a man proposed to his girlfriend using a crossword puzzle, a tale that captivated LinkedIn.

Proposing to the love of your life with something truly special is an art. It’s a moment that remains a cherished memory for everyone. With this in mind, a man from Pune created the perfect proposal for his girlfriend, who adored solving puzzles from The Indian Express newspaper. Imagine hearing those magical words through a crossword puzzle!

Anant Goenka, the executive director of the newspaper, shared this touching story on LinkedIn. “The very cute story of a 31-yr-old Pune reader who took The Indian Express’s help to surprise his girlfriend with a marriage proposal," he began, detailing how it all happened. His girlfriend, an anonymous puzzle-loving historian, couldn’t start her day without solving the Express crossword with her morning Chai.

The man, who chose to remain anonymous, said that he wanted the proposal to be part of their everyday life and intimate rather than public. Since they had done the Express crossword together many times, it was the perfect unexpected surprise. He emailed the puzzles team for help to include “marry me" in the mini crossword. The puzzles editor was happy to assist.

“I came up with the idea while we were doing the crossword over WhatsApp," he shared. “After getting the ring made from sea glass we collected on a trip to Spain, a friend put me in touch with the Puzzle Editor. After some secretive planning, everything was set by the evening of July 3," the boyfriend revealed.

The next morning, the newspaper hadn’t been delivered yet, and his girlfriend was complaining about the missing crossword with her tea. “I laughed and suggested, ‘Why don’t we try the IE Mini?’" And there it was, a puzzle waiting to be solved!

But it didn’t click for her right away, he shared. Some clues were tricky, and she was taking her time while he grew increasingly nervous. When she finally got to 7-Across, cleverly clued as ‘Words with a nice ring to them?’, the answer didn’t hit her. So, she moved on. I was fidgeting with the ring in my pocket," he shared. Seven minutes later, with more letters filled in, she had her eureka moment. “Oh, marry me," she exclaimed.

That was his cue! “The moment she said it, everything moved fast. I pulled out the ring and went down on one knee. Of course, she said yes! We couldn’t stop giggling and finished the crossword in 12 minutes and 57 seconds."

What a story! Goenka was so thrilled that he announced in his viral LinkedIn post, “Every wedding guest will now be gifted an Indian Express subscription by the couple."

Truly, this story beautifully shows how little things matter, and having the right person beside you can make those little things even more special!
