Dogs often run at bikes and cars as a moving target triggers their hunting instinct.

At some point, we all have seen the deadly chase between dogs and humans. Now, a viral video shows a cyclist being chased by a group of stray dogs. The clip, which was taken by the cyclist himself, shows the dogs almost catching up to the biker. Thankfully, the biker manages to outrun the dogs but not after a long hard chase. This undated video was posted on Instagram on January 1. So far it has mustered over 30 lakh likes. It is unclear where and when this video was taken.

Commenting on it, an Instagram user wrote, “I think this is the highest speed in your career." Another mentioned, “Last dog is gonna brag to the others that he almost had him." Someone joked, “They are actually helping him to lose weight." An Instagram user remarked, “This is why my fear of dogs exists."

Dogs often chase bikes and cars as a moving vehicle triggers their hunting instinct. Dogs also chase people when they think that the person poses a threat. The fact that dogs are territorial also makes them prone to chasing anyone or anything that ventures into their ‘territory’. This is why unknown people are chased more often by stray dogs than those who stay in the same neighborhood. The increased stray dog population, as a result of lacking spay-neuter programs, also leads to dog-human conflict.

Not all instances of a dog chasing a biker are unpleasant. In August last year, a couple which was biking across Europe adopted a dog that began following them. Maggie Jo and Maeve were biking across the scenic bike trails of Europe when they spotted a stray canine following them throughout the day.

Maggie told The Dodo, “When Monte first started following us, we thought she would eventually just get tired and stop, and we would get on with our journey, but she just kept running and no matter how far she fell behind, she would always catch up when we were either climbing hills or taking a rest." The couple eventually treated the dog for fleas and sterilised her. They named the dog Monte. For the rest of the trip, Monte accompanied them through Europe. Finally, the couple took Monte with them to the USA.
